Project Start/End Dates: January 2009 – April 2009
Initial Project Description: The Operation Sunshine Literacy Program is a program designed by Operation Sunshine Inc. to assist developmentally delayed adults in gaining the skills necessary to maintain a good quality of life in the community. The purpose of this program is to establish concrete concepts allowing these individuals to integrate easily into the community, such as acquiring the skills to find and maintain employment. A variety of skills were taught and methods used as a means of meeting these goals, such as:
- Communication skills and basic adult literacy skills (printing, writing, math, computer use, reading, music, etc.)
- Cooking
- Exercise
- Health and hygiene
- Crafts
- Field trips
Project Outcomes: Developmentally delayed adults aged 25-55 participated in the 12-week program. Program instructors base evaluations of outcomes on the observation for improvements in participants in various tasks and concepts. Instructors have voiced seeing significant progress in participating individuals, “especially with regards to literacy and healthy eating”. Participants are much more skilled in concepts related to daily living as a direct result of the program, providing them with the opportunity to maintain an improved quality of life in the community.
