Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador

Opportunities Program

We are no longer accepting applications for our 2011/2012 Opportunities Program.

Literacy NL would like to thank all those who applied. Successful applicants will be notified once a decision has been reached.

The Opportunities Program of Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador enables us to partner with local community groups, supporting projects that address community priorities in adult and family learning. Through this project we work to achieve one or more of the following:

  • Gain public support and awareness for literacy and learning
  • Increase communication and networking among individuals and organizations
  • Commit to excellence, innovation, capacity building and/or research
  • Collaborate with groups who have no established history of collaboration

In 2009-2010, and again in 2010-2011, Literacy NL successfully completed the first two rounds of its Opportunities Program, providing monetary and networking resources in support of twenty family and adult learning initiatives at the community level. Areas of focus for these projects include:

  • basic adult literacy support;
  • health literacy;
  • family literacy;
  • women and literacy;
  • English as a Second Language;
  • Learning Disabilities;
  • GED support;
  • computers and literacy;
  • essential skills in career development;
  • arts based adult literacy;
  • arts based youth literacy;
  • summer youth programming;
  • adult basic literacy.

The following program descriptions offer a brief overview of each approved project for our most recent call, along with the project outcomes:

Our first Call to Partner was issued on August of 2008. An internal evaluation in the fall of 2009 identified that the Opportunities Program was successful in attracting partners from all regions of the province. Participants in these projects built new skills in computer literacy, life skills, continuous learning, reading, writing, numeracy, critical thinking, oral communication.

Furthermore, the projects modeled effective and innovative actions to address the learning needs of a wide cross section of our population: women, families, immigrants, learning disabled, developmentally delayed adults, new parents, and adults interested in upgrading their skills.

The following program descriptions offer a brief overview of each approved project for the first call, along with the project outcomes:
