Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador

Project Name: Little Learners Revamped – Fogo Island Family Resource Centre Inc.

Project Start/End Dates: Fall 2010; continuing program

Initial Project Description: The Little Learners Club is one of the most popular programs offered by the Fogo Island Family Resource Centre, and has been ongoing for the past 12 years.. It is designed for families with children aged 0-4 years and it provides these families with the opportunity to develop a passion for reading. Each week the children registered for the program receive a new batch (usually four) of age appropriate books.

The objectives of this project are to:

  • Provide the preschool community with the opportunity to develop a passion for the written word at an early age
  • Encourage early learning and the continuation of learning throughout life
  • Provide needed resources of books and book bags to support the program

Project Outcomes: The Fogo Island Family Resource Centre was able to replace library and book bag materials that were worn from use and successfully improve on the program for participants. The new bags with screened local artwork engendered more enthusiasm among children and parents. This program continues all year and into the future, and will benefit from the continued use of the new materials.

Developed and hosted by NALD in collaboration with Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador.

This project is funded by the Government of Canada’s Office of Literacy and Essential Skills.
