How to Tutor Learners of English as a Second Language: Bay St. George Literacy Council

Initial Project Description: How to Tutor Learners of English as a Second Language is a program designed by the Bay St. George Literacy Council to address the needs of the increasing number of immigrants and visiting groups to the area. Tutors are trained in the field of English as a Second Language (ESL). The workshop includes sessions on:
- Sensitivity to the feelings and special needs of adult learners, particularly ESL learners
- Identification of similarities between English speaking and ESL learners
- Insight on issues facing non-English speaking individuals as newcomers to our area/province/country
- Teaching methods for adults
- Where to find resource material for the ESL learner
- How to develop customized ESL reading material
Goals of this program include:
- Providing the public with knowledge of this program
- Enhancing partnerships with other organizations
- Creating new partnerships will be with businesses and community organizations
- Local businesses/organizations will be accommodating to employees so that they can attend literacy tutoring/training
- Providing trained Adult ESL tutors in the field to benefit ESL learners
- Generating capacity for increased customized learning material for ESL learners and other adult learners
Project Outcomes: The successes of the program include:
- 15 newly trained ESL tutors available to the public
- Effective promotion of the value of literacy and skills training
- Media coverage of the partner organizations and their services
