Families Reading Together: Dover and Area Community Family Coalition

Project Start/End Dates: January 26 – March 2, 2009

Initial Project Description: Families Reading Together is a program designed by the Dover and Area Community Family Coalition to strengthen family ties and encourage a life-long love of reading. The purpose of this program is to foster literacy development, increase awareness of the value of literacy, and teach parents and children that reading can be fun. Parents/caregivers and preschool children will:

  • Develop and write their own stories
  • Visit the library
  • Learn through music and rhyme
  • Learn about literacy in the world around us

Project Outcomes: The program took place at four centers: Dover, Gambo, Centreville and Glovertown over a period of six weeks. Thirty-two children participated in the project along with their parent or guardian. Library visits and storybook creation were the favorite activities of the participants. Both facilitators and parents voiced the opinion that the program was effective in fostering a love of reading, particularly between parent and child. Comments from parents state that they would like to see the program offered again because “it gives the parents and children something to do together”.

Developed and hosted by NALD in collaboration with Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador.

This project is funded by the Government of Canada’s Office of Literacy and Essential Skills.
