Introduction to Computers: Labrador West Status of Women’s Council

Project Start/End Dates: January 20 – March 3, 2009

Initial Project Description: Introduction to Computers is a program offered by the Labrador West Status of Women’s Council in an effort to provide computer literacy skills to women to help them meet personal goals. The aim of this project is to provide one-on-one training to women, seniors, disabled women and women with special needs in a friendly environment where they can learn about computers while building self-esteem. Providing women with computer literacy skills enables them to access online resources such as government sites, job banks and other resources that are available through the internet. Areas of instruction include:

  • Turning a computer on and off
  • Using Windows
  • Webpage description
  • Cut/paste options
  • Using the internet
  • Microsoft Word
  • E-mail
  • Downloading

Project Outcomes: 12 individuals participated for one night per week in the six-week course. Another 20 signed up for future sessions. All of the participants reported satisfaction with the program and there was a great deal of positive feedback. One participant stated that she “is not afraid to use a computer now… [It] gives you your independence back… [At] 82 years of age, this is the first time I feel independent.” This project also created an increased awareness for literacy and learning, through media coverage, advertising and personal feedback.

Developed and hosted by NALD in collaboration with Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador.

This project is funded by the Government of Canada’s Office of Literacy and Essential Skills.
