In 2003, the International Adult Literacy Skills Survey found that over 9 million working age Canadians (aged 16-65) had low literacy and essential skills – of which 5.9 million (65%) were employed.
Engaging employers in the essential skills dialogue is a key priority for OLES.

The federal government has passed responsibility for labour market training to the provinces and territories. Each year, through the Labour Market Agreements (LMA), the provinces and territories receive over $500 million for training people who are not eligible under Employment Insurance (EI). A particular feature of the LMAs is the priority placed on those with low levels of Essential Skills and/or without a high school credential. These agreements have already affected how and to whom literacy and essential skills services are delivered.

This 2-hour presentation will include practical methods for participants to promote early literacy development in children ages 0 to 6 years as well as theoretical information about child development including brain development. Discussion will include topics such as ways to support children as they lead their own learning through play while balanced with adult-led activities in a variety of settings (home, childcare, school). Appropriate interactions and relationships with children are key to supporting each child’s optimal development.
