Background: The Telegram Raise-a-Reader program began in St. John's in 2006 as a collaborative venture between the corporate and community-learning sectors. The initiative promotes an increased awareness of the importance of literacy skills acquisition, and raises funds to support local learning initiatives. Funds are distributed through its Literacy Grants application process, with funding opportunities of up to $2000 per organization.
Literacy NL would like to thank everyone that made the 2011 Raise-A-Reader event a success.
This year's campaign raised over $12,000! To read more about this year's initiative, visit The Telegram website.
The Raise-a-Reader campaign was adopted by The Telegram in 2006 to support literacy work by helping increase awareness and raise money to fund child and family literacy programs in NL. The campaign has since donated more than $84,000 to non-profit literacy programs, public school, and community libraries throughout the province.
The campaign occurs only one day a year, however raising readers is a 365 day activity! For those of you who are on Facebook, please like the Literacy NL page and tell us how you are raising a reader.
Happy reading, everyone!
