Minister Addresses AGM 2009
Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on June 11, 2009. The Minister of Education for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Honourable Darin King was in attendance. He addressed the gathering and spoke on the government’s standpoint in relation to literacy and learning in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
After greeting everyone, Minister King touched on the importance of the NL Government addressing literacy and learning issues: “Literacy certainly has been and continues to be a hugely important issue for [the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador], and a big part of the focus that we are going to be narrowing in on over the coming years for sure…From the perspective of our government, I want to say to you up front…we all recognize that literacy is very crucial to lifelong learning for all of us…the greater the education level you attain, the greater the literacy level you attain, the greater the opportunities that will be available for you both for higher education or for personal and professional career development.”
Minister King went on to say that the government is “absolutely committed to moving…forward [with respect to the Adult Literacy Plan]…that this is a priority for me. We do need to get this plan done. It has been a cornerstone politically for our government, for the Progressive Conservative government”.
He also briefly mentioned some of the various financial assistance programs available to those who wish to keep going and pursue post-secondary education, including the $2000 scholarships and the elimination of interest on provincial student loans.
Minister King concluded his speech by stating that he is dedicated to adult literacy and working toward advancing the cause in our province during his time spent in office.
